About Chemistry Olympiad
The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad is a multi-tiered competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. It is sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS). Each year, four students are chosen to represent the USA in the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), which is hosted every year in July in which countries from throughout the world send their four best high school chemistry students to compete against each other. About 80 countries participate in the competition, which is held in a different country each year.

How to Participate
1) The ACS Orange County Chemistry Olympiad is the first step in the US National Chemistry Olympiad. Typically, about forty High Schools from all over Orange County send up to four students each to compete in the Local Section exam, which is usually held in early March. The top eleven or twelve scorers in the Local Section exam are eligible to advance to the national round of the competition where each student takes a five-hour exam that includes extensive laboratory work.
2) If your Local Section nominates you after the Local Competition, you will have the opportunity to participate in the National Chemistry Olympiad Exam. Approximately 1,000 students across the US advance to this round. The national exam involves three parts administered to more than 1,000 students. Students can use past National Exams to prepare.
3) The 20 top scoring students from the National Exam spend two weeks at a Study Camp in June to undergo rigorous training. Based on their performance, four students are chosen to represent the U.S. at the International Chemistry Olympiad in July.
Orange County Section
Over the past thirty-six years, six Orange County schools (Beckman, Irvine, Sunny Hills, Troy, University and Valencia) have had students qualify for the US National Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp. This year two students from Beckman and University high school were members of the team that represented the U.S, and earned gold medals.
2019 Results: There were 36 schools participating in the local exam in 2019. It was held on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019, at the Business Sciences and Technology Innovation Center (BSTIC), Irvine Valley College, Irvine. The US National Chemistry Olympiad was April 27, 2019, and the 51st International Chemistry Olympiad on July 21-30, 2019. in Paris, France.
